Today I Learned . . . Revenge is Counter Productive

I’m not sure where I heard it, but I remember being told that revenge is like you drinking poison and then expecting the other person to die.

I thought that was a pretty interesting way to describe it.

Often times in life we get so angry at someone or something that we perceive as an injustice to us.  All we can think about is getting back at that that person or thing for what we think they have done to us.  It can take over our thoughts and our actions.

I think that is referred to in some places as “seething with anger.”

I’ve been there myself.

But who does that really hurt?

Usually, the person you are angry with has moved on, or if not, couldn’t care less about how you feel.  Sad but true.

So the only one you  are hurting in that situation is yourself.

Today I learned to stop drinking that poison and to stop expecting the other person to be affected by any desire, no matter how slight, that I might carry for revenge.
